But (may I be honest?) there doesn't seem to be much difference in the advances. A few thousand dollars for the first-time novelist. That's not make or break, to me.
I am at the point where I will forego all monies just to see my baby on a shelf. Somewhere. Anywhere.

thanks, CL--i really do think the dollar value should be negligable. $1500 really isn't that different from $5000, especially since (fingers crossed) your royalties are going to earn out either way. and you know my take on large unearned advances. they make me sad.
you do need to have some advance, though--there's an old addage that if money doesn't change hands, no contract exists.
I thought it was really interesting because it was specific to my genre. However, I gather it's about right for other genres as well?
Speaking from romance, I'd say it's about right for that genre as well. ;)
